What I do to shave emblems is just sand them down smooth. About the valve cover, that's fine that you did it all red, a few of us have done the same. You should get red paint and do a few coats of it, after a few coats it will be nice looking.

Yah, sand um, I totally recomend sanding them down, if u plan to put the decal, it'll stick way better to the car that way.

I'm obsessed with shaving body lines door handles and emblums. If it's a body line or emblum that only sticks out with no indents on the plastic, then take a modeling knife and whittle it off till it is near chopped down to the same level as the body, then start sanding, bringing it up to about 400 grit will do the job. Depending on what company makes the kit (due to plastic hardness) I wouldn't suggest skipping the knife step, as you'll sand the area around the emblum down as well, and you'll get a broad dip in the plastic, so when the light reflects off of it you can tell. If you want to shave the door handles, and there's an indent in the plastic, then whittle the handle down with a knife, fill the indent and sand down to 400 grit, higher grit if you're not priming the body.
I believe AMT and revell have harder plastic than fujimi hasegawa and tamiya.

Don't paint the valve cover gloss red. The real car comes with a flat red valve cover. It doesn't really matter but I'm picky like that.

Go there and click on pictures on the top left. There are some good engine bay pics.
