2000 Cougar transmission range sensor

The check engine light recently came on in my Cougar, so I had the diagnostic done and it came back as being the transmission range sensor. Does anyone have any information on what this means and what type of repair is in order. I need to get this taken care of quickly so I can drive back home, about 150 miles. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

that shouldnt give you a check engine light. does your starter grind when you go to start the car? the switch lets the computer know what gear your in.
