alternator problems

I have a 1991 Chevy Corsica. Since January I have gone through 6 alternators. Every time when I have put a new one in (under warrenty of course) I have charged the battery fully put they don't last very long. Anywhere from 1 week to 2 months. I have been told it might be where I am getting them, but is it really possible that Champion gave me 6 bad delco alternators? what about shorts, where should I look. I do have a stereo system but I disconnected that completely and it still went out. Any suggestions on what to do, or what to check would be helpful.

Hubby thinking you may have wrong alternator in computer system at store where you purchase battery,,making this a continous problem. How about your cars computer-main brain...ignition system would have the short, wiring , harness. Check a Chiltons manual or other auto book, also. Did you have a diagnostic run done? (50-70$), but may have been cheaper in the long run and w/o all your hassle. Well, good luck.

Chevrolet Corsicas a notorious for eating alternators. Nobody knows for sure why they do, but they do, I think it is a heat problem. The is one alternator that alot of people get that seems to be better than the stock alternaotr, it is called "Iceberg" and comes in vrious amperages (up to 200amps, I believe). The IceBerg alternators are kind of expensive, but well worth it. Napa Auto Parts also has a universal alternator for the corsica, that is a direct drop in, and is 100amps. I currently have this one on my '90 2.2L corsica and fixing to get one for my '90 3.1L corsica. The cost of it is around $100.00. I have had the one on my 2.2L for a little under a year without any problems at all

Did you replace the battery? Also, if you have a dig. multimeter, test the battery when the car is off. Hook the meter to the battery. Have someone remove one fuse at a time and see if the voltage changes. You may find a short somewhere or a draw. With the car running, test the voltage. It should read 13-14 volts. If its reading under 12, its not charging the battery properly. And of course, if the car off and the battery tests under 12, you may have deep cycled the battery. Also, is your sound system drawing anything? Even disconnected, is there a short somewhere? I would reinstall the power and ground wires if you have amps. I

my brother has the same problem with his plymuth voyager(its a carappy car), well anyways it 's not that its corsica cause i have one and i know alot of people who drive one too and they hever have that kind of problem. Check and see if you have any other stuff that may suck power out of your car (like my brother has 2 12" subs so that's his problem).
