Hello,
'96 Jetta has temp. gauge creeping up hotter than normal then dipping slightly, then back up. Bad thermostat? I added coolant to see if I had diluted too much w/ water on long trip. Needle is still moving around. Can't believe they put the thermostat in upside down on the bottom! Do I need to have this retaining ring Haynes guide mentions? Guy at parts shop said new thermostat doesn't come with a ring or seal, just glue cover back on with RTV??!! -Thanks |

Re: Thermostat replacement
The thermostat should have an O-ring. You save money by ordering online. Never trust anyone that tells you to use RTV instead of a proper seal. It doesn't hurt to use a small amount in addition to the seal. If you do, buy the grey sealant for European cars.
