Thumbs down 2001 Altima Belts Squealing...

My 2001 Altima sounds awful! The belts are all squealing like crazy especially the Power Steering / AC belt which goes crazy with every turn (especially when the AC is on). It sounds worst when turning, when starting, and when the AC kicks in. I had the belts replaced a month ago and it sounded fine for a couple of weeks but now it is back to the same old noises. Any ideas?

There is also a noticable rattle when I have the windows down and I'm idleing (it really starts to get noisy when the AC fan goes on). Also, is it normal for the fan to continue runnning after I turn the car off (it runs for about 30 seconds while the car is turned off)?

My car also sounds/feels like it is about to fall apart or have the wheels fall off whenever I go over a bump (whole car rattles). New tires helped but didn't solve the problem. There is also a loud banging sound coming from underneath the car when I start it up.

My car has 60k miles on it and sounds awful; it is starting to get embaressing! Help!

Re: 2001 Altima Belts Squealing...

Sounds like your motor mounts are broken. I think that means that the actual part that holds your engine in place is not solid. If it is loose your bands and pulleys will not be lined up and will eventually fall off or snap. Same when turning, if your engine is thrashing around it rubs against other components causing the noise. The fan is usuallt cinnected to the engine via the belt so if the engine turns of the fan should turn off as well; but is it is not that means that it isn't secured properly by the belt.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like it would be an expensive repair. Do you have any idea how difficult/costly this repair would be? Is this a common problem in Altimas? I had been told by a relative that it may be a misaligned pully (I guess broken motor mounts would explain the misalignment). Thanks again.

Might be that the bolts are loose or gone. Get it checked out, and maybe it is just the bolts. It is a bit expensive but not more than any other repair a car would eventually need.
