starter bolts

i have a 1995 gmc 2500 4x4 87k on it and both of the starter bolts snapped off. a buddy of mine drilled them out and put heli coils in it but they really didnt hold up. i noticed there was a third starter mounting hole in the block i was wondering where i could get a starter that would fit that. thanks.

Re: starter bolts

Not really sure. Why the Heli coils. Did you try a tap set? Thats a tough spot, hopefully someone on here will know what to do. I have a buddy with a 350 sitting on an engine stand for the last 3 years because of this same problem.

Re: starter bolts

Some starters were staggered bolt, and others (the current ones I think) are forward side to side bolt pattern. I guess the mold they use to stamp out the blocks are universal for the bolt holes. I cured my problem by buying longer case hardened black allen head bolts, tapped out the same holes deeper than the one inch. A 3/8 bottom tap is what I used. This way your new bolt will go into the block further. I think one of the holes is limited on how far you can go.I used alot of Locktite 271 when re-installing. Never had problem again.
