Question 2003 Passat auto trans indicator lights

2003 1.8T Passat with auto trans. Dash lights indicating transmission selection do not change no matter gear or mode (auto or tiptronic). All I get on the dash is black PRND432 against a red background all the time. Transmission works fine and when placed into "manual" or tiptronic mode I can change gears - I just have no idea of what gear I'm in. Fuses appear OK but I haven't pulled any to look at closely.

If only............. It has about 53,000 miles (and only one oil pump replacement) and therefore has gone beyond its warranty coverage. Do you know of anything short of a visit to the dealer I could do? I can see no loose wires and fuses are all good. Can't remove the cover plate around the lever for fear of breaking something.

Isn't the display of that part of the trip computer display? Anything else wrong with the trip computer? Miles incorrect, mileage, etc.

Thanks for your response. All of the trip computer functions work fine. Miles are correct, the outside temp. works fine and I've run the trip computer through all cycles/displays and there are no problems. It's just the indicator section for the autotrans. It's really got me stumped.
