SoCal SERCA track event

This is for the SoCal guys (or anyone near enough to drive over):

I am proud to announce that SoCal SERCA will be hosting our first ever, very
own track day at Streets, and there are only about 25 spots left, out of a
max 50 total. This has been in the works for a loong time now, and was
purposely scheduled just before the time change and when the temps come down
a bit. There should be lots of track time and this includes cornerworkers
and EMS crew.

SoCal SERCA at Streets of Willow Springs

Date: Friday, October 12, 2001 - 7 AM-5 PM

Cost:
SERCA members: $110
Non SERCA members: $140

For those of you not bothering to do the math, you can join SERCA and still save money on this one event. You'll also have a chance to meet some of the most knowledgeable SR20 drivers in the country. Wish I was close enough to attend. I've even thought about flying out for this.

I'm interested in doing this, (this sounds damn cool! I've wanted to do a track day at willow since way back when I had a street bike), but my worry is my g20 is my main car...My 'starts EVERY morning and get me to work' car.
These track days, they just throw you out on the track with a bunch of other guys, right? I'm worried about getting hit, and damaging my car. And, since I would be a first timer, I'd imagine I'd get to run with the other first timers.... more chance of collisions I'd guess.

But, damn I'd like to do this.

Don't worry. The SERCA group has a lot of experience with track events. You'll ride with an instructor and they will build you up to speed slowly.

I was in charge of the track event seminar for the SE-R National Convention this year. I can say we had a great time and nobody got too out of shape. I'm sure this track event will work the same way. You'll get someone with experience with you who will take you up to speed slowly, show you the line, make sure you not only exhibit correct track ettiquite, but also make you more aware of what goes on around you.

As for being your "must start every time car," I drove my must start every time car (my G) at the convention..... 2,000 miles from home. Don't worry, you should do a few minor things to prep the car (basic stuff like fresh brake fluid, make sure there are no leaks, make sure your wheel bearings aren't going or gone bad). The SERCA folks will be really helpful.

Just to add to what George said.

Usually these track events are not competitive. Meaning, no passing unless the other guy yields and lets you buy on a straight, no aggressive driving, no hair pulling and eye poking. They are pretty safe and as long as you don't let ego get the better of you, it should be really safe.

It's hella fun and will be the most fun you have with your car. Damn I raced on stock wheels and tires last week and still had a blast. Don't worry about your car breaking. If you do break something if it's like past events I've heard about you'll have about 4 monkeys under your car going to work before you even get back to the pits.

Boy howdy, that's good advice. You said it better than I did. The key is to never drive over your head. If you cannot turn in, apex, and exit at the same points every lap, you're driving too fast. When I drove at the SE-R convention my car was under prepped so I just took it easy (relatively speaking). It's not racing and you don't have anything to prove to anyone. Just have fun.

Oh and at the SE-R convention, since I was an instructor, I got to drive some other cars. One of them was a stock SE-R with old dampers. It was still safe and still a lot of fun. You don't nead a heavily modded car to enjoy it.

Just to back up what Geo said. The people running SERCA, as well most of the members, have track experience. THis will be a limited number of people and most have some sort of track experience. They will not be "just thrown out on the track". Obviously there will be some grouping of skill levels involved. When and where you can pass will probably be also dependent on what group you will be in. It should be very organized and fun event. As for your daily driver issue, most of the cars are daily drivers including mine which takes me on my 80mi. round trip commute to work everyday! Everything should be fine as long as you drive within your limits. Its NOT A RACE. Just a lapping day w/ some cool SERCA people...ehehe.
