97 SE Gages Reversed

OK I am stumped on this…

I have a 97 4dr Grand AM SE with a 3.1l and auto tranny with 163,500 miles.

The car was working fine then the water pump went out and I over heated and blew the intake and head gasgets! (they went right as I pulled into my house!! )

I geplaced the gasgets and the engine runs fine now, not H2O out the tail and makes no funny noises. The problem is now all the gages (temp, tach, speedo, fuel) all move the wrong way when you turn the key on! It has half a tank of gas and the gage shows empty. When the engine is running it shows negative rpm!

It sound to me like the “+” & “-“ are reverced but how can that be??? I hooked up all the wires & plugs, cuz the engine runs great!

I checked all the grounds (that I can find/see) and none of them are corroded.

Any thoughts?

Ya, the pins on the dash clusters plug-in could be bent and not making proper contact.

But did you actually hav the cluster out? and why ?

Well I have not had the cluster out yet, I am almost there, just have to unplug it. I started taking it out to replace the bulb in the radio so it is just 4 more screws to get the cluster out.

Is there a wire diagram some place that I can use to test out the dash??

I was reading and could it be the BCM?? Does this car have a BCM??

So if you didnt hav the cluster out ,then the pins on the plug shouldnt be bent or damaged then. But the cluster could very well be bad.

Did the gauges work correctly before the engine work?
Make sure everything under the hoods pluged in and all the connectors are connected.
Might even try disconnecting the battery for 20min or so and see if they reset.

Ya they work fine before the engine work. Then they craped out on restart.

I have checked and double checked everything on it. I am going to go unhook the + side of the bat and leve it overnight to see if it will reset.

Ahhhhhhhhh!!

I hope to get this fixed soon.
