Wheel base for towing-Tahoe or Avalanche

I currently own a Trailblazer and we are upgrading to a bigger vechicle. We have a camper and have some concerns about sway with the trailblazer so we are considering a Tahoe or Avalance 05-07. The weight for towing isnt the problem but we are concerned about the wheelbase vs. overall length of the truck. Any one have any suggestions about either the Tahoe or Avalance. How Much difference does overall length vs. wheelbase make when towing?

Thanks

Re: Wheel base for towing-Tahoe or Avalanche

Hi,
The longer the wheelbase, length between front and rear tires, the more resistant the tow vehicle will be to changes imposed by the trailer. A Tahoe is a step up from your Trailblazer and helped by the greater width also. I think a Suburban or Avalanche is 11" longer bodywise overall than the Tahoe. It is a longer wheelbase than the Tahoe. Question becomes how long is your trailer and how is it loaded? I don't like a 30' or 32' on a bumper hitch behind a Suburban or Avalanche. It can be done, you have to be careful how you load it and it will make you pay attention. I pull a 20' car trailer around with a Tahoe all the time. If you are in the 24' to 26' range, Tahoe is ok, Suburban or Avalanche is better. It is important not to have the trailer tail heavy, a 16' trailer, with the weight to the rear, will have you changing lanes on a downhill run just when you don't want to. So, what size are you towing and do you have it loaded correctly?

You will also want to make sure that the supension is heavy enough to handle the weight of the trailer, 3/4ton.
