water in the oil
1991 geo tracker
Ya thats right lots of water in the oil so much that it ran out of the dip stick tube. and the spark plug holes when I jacked it on one side to drain the oil. There was about two gallons of fluid that came out of the oil pan. Will be opening the engine up today. Where can this amout of anitfreeze come from?I just replaced the head about 300 mile ago( cam shaft was worn ). I used a new head gasket. Any suggestion where to look for this leak when I open her up. thanks himie |

Re: water in the oil
I'll ask the obvious questions before someone else does.
Why was the gasket replaced? Were the block and head absolutely clean of old gasket material, and were they absolutely flat with no nicks or dings? Did you use the right model gasket? Is it right side up and front to front? Did the head first land on the gasket out of place, skewed? Did you use a gasket sealant? Are the head bolts properly torqued in the right sequence? You may have just gotten a lemon for a gasket. Beyond the head gasket I can only think there may be a crack in the block between the coolent passages and the cylinders and oil passages. Good luck. |

Re: water in the oil
The lhead gasket was replaced I changed heads because of a worn cam shaft. I as lazy and didnt swap cams. I will check this head for warpage. I have the head off and cannot see and cracks. I would have done a compression test first but all the cylanders were full of oil and water and I didnt want to ruin my compression tester. Should I use gasket sealant on this head gasket? the last time I used sealant I pluged the oil hole and then ruined the cam shaft. If i use sealant shoult I use permatex or gasket Shellac?

I found the problem, one of the little philips head screws that hold the rocker arm shaft in place came loose and went under a cam lobe. I punched a two inch hole in the top of the head. I then repaced the head and J-B welded the screws and center punched them on the replacement head. Watch the screws.
