Need to know which front wheel bearing is bad!

Ok, so I am getting this noisy whiny metal sound from the front of the car, 95' Metro. It sounds like it is coming from the right side. When I drive by a fence or near a wall, you can really hear it scream on the right side of the car.

The sound GOES AWAY when I do hard LEFT turns.

I took it to the shop, they said it was the front right wheel bearing going bad.

Is this right? Or is it the front left wheel bearing. I am so confused, and want to make sure I am spending my money on what needs to be fixed.

P.S. In other news, I changed out my manual transmission fluid. It was kinda hard to change, but I was actually running low on fluid! The stuff that was in there was pretty nasty looking, and lots of sludge was on the drain plug when I pulled it off. I idle a little closer to 1000 rpms now, I would say around 950 after I changed the fluid. It was idling kind of rough before. And I used the 79W-80 kind of gear oil, recommended in the owners manual. It took around 2.5 quarts. Glad I changed it.

if you jack the front off the car off the ground and support it well you can start the car and put it in gear then get out and listen at each wheel to see what side sounds noisy. for some reason the pass side bearing seems to wear out faster than the drivers side, i change about 4 pass sides to 1 drivers side

Have a look at

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=472753

I had the same problem.

Don't change them (both at same time!) yourself unless you are good
at mechanics and have lots of tools and time....

BIG difference when job is completed though!

You don't want those bearings to burn out and damage the spindles
or rotors - so" 'git her done!" as the Cable Guy would say.

Re: Need to know which front wheel bearing is bad!

In my experience, if you make a fast hard left turn and the noise goes away, it would mean the left bearing is bad as you are throwing the weight to the right side placing less weight on the left bearing, thus the noise lessens.

I agree with Marvin. Most likely the left side is bad. If you can safely jack the car up and listen to one side at a time with a stethescope or a broomstick you should be able to hear a growling sound from the bad one.

The drain plug for your gear oil is magnetic! Smart huh?
