detaching speedometer cable

I'm trying to replace the instrument cluster light in my dashboard. I have a 1994 tracer, but no one is in that forum, so I thought I'd try the Ford. I have the steering column lowered, the trim panel off, but I can't figure out how to detach the speedometer cable. My book says to reach up under the panel and press the retainer clip. I can barely get my hand in there. And when it is, I don't know what I'm feeling for or what color the speedometer cable is. Help!

Re: detaching speedometer cable

if you have long enough arms, dont reach behind the clsuter, reach from underneath and follow the speedometer cabel to where it connects to the clsuter. IIRC the retainer is white.

you have to push it in one the sides and pull on it IIRC, but it's been over 2 years since i've had my escort.

Re: detaching speedometer cable

Pull the speedo cable out of the tranny to give you slack. Then you can pull the cluster out farther to reach your hand in there.
The cable is just held in by the clip, dont take the clip out, just pull on the cable, then to put the cable back, just snap/press in back in.
