tranny leaking

My transmission is leaking on my 97 s10 but it is leaking from the top where the gear shifter meets the tranny. My question is, is it ok to take the top of the transmission off where the gear shifter meets the tranny? I don't want to take that part off and have there be a spring or have any of the gears move on me.
