Perform Service

The VIC did the usual countdown for mileage to change oil. I have it set for every 3K because I'm using Dino and also because I'm babying a motor about to turn 200K.

I did the reset after the change and for several days now I've got 0 miles to Service and Perform Service messages. Somehow my reset must have not taken.

Anyone know where the VIC is getting it's data from?

I have a 98 Limited but this is how I do mine...

Ignition to "On"
display the "miles to service" info (press select to view it)
hold the "set" button for 2 seconds

I did read somewhere that if you turn off the ignition before it takes that it will automatically reset to the original info, aka '0 miles'

If something strange is going on, I have the Body Diagnostic Manuals for 1998. They go into pretty heavy detail of electrical diagnostics.

That's kind of what I usually do too. It always seems to take a few tries but eventually I get it. I finally got it to reset a few days later. Yesterday after stopping somewhere for an hour I got in and started the Jeep and the clock and date was flashing and it had reset to 12:00 am Jan 1.

So I had to putz with it for awhile and get it set again, but it hadn't lost my mileage countdown data.

That seems to be one of the big downsides of jeeps. Lots of electronic glitches. To this day I cannot get the seat memory to change. It always goes back to the previous owners settings.

I also have the terminal "coolant sensor bad" and "rear lamp failure". All components work fine, I just have to find the semi-shorted conditions that cause the VIC to give false alarms. Oh well, I still like my jeep.

Well I'm closing in on 200K miles I figure it's got a right to have a few oddball things but I'll also keep fixing what I can. This is easily the best vehicle I have ever owned.

I wish I could find out more about the VIC. Like is it a dumb panel and where does it get the data it display's.

Do you have your owners manual? I had a rear lamp failure this summer - a bulb up in the third light on the tailgate blew. I replaced it with the same number bulb I found up there. Still had the message yet all lights were fine.
Don't even know why I thought to be looking through the manual but I found a page that listed all the replacement numbers for the bulbs in the vehicle.

Previous owner had put the wrong number in there and I of course simply went and got what I found in the socket! It was close and it fit but it wasn't the exact replacement number. Putting the right one in stopped the VIC message.

I feel your pain. I did the same thing with the headlight bulb. Replaced the existing only to find out the owner before me got the wrong one.

I do have the annoying rear lamp failure VIC alert. The tail lights are fine. I read on this forum that it is a voltage drop issue with slightly corroded wires. I just haven't had the time to pull the light and clean the contacts.

Like I said before, if you want me to look up something in the Service Manual or Diagnostic Manuals (2), I'd be glad to. I have my email turned on for this forum. It's the least I can do since this place has walked me through a lot of issues with my Jeep. We have different years but overall the info should still be relevant.

My opinion is find a Complete teardown Repair manual of your jeep. You can find that at amazon.com . I have one. It have the complete Motor electrical and chassis electrical diagram. The problem you are having looks like a old plug on the main electrical system failing and grounding. That makes your VC reset automatically. I recomend to you find the manual buy a multimeter and a tester and start following the diagram starting for the main fuses. the manuel will tell you what voltage is suppose to run on each accesory etc. and of course it will take at least a day to find the bad plug ,cable or connector. Hi, all jeep have the rear bulb problem specially stop bulbs they blew up fast . I had that problem I solve it buying the long lasting sylvania bulbs. Now they have almost a year and I m still with the same bulb. Those silvania bulbs are little more expensive but they work exelent.

THe other problem you have with the VC that still indicating a damage bulb try to resolving this way first
1-Disconect both cables positive and negative of the battery wait 15 minutes and then connect it again.
2-If you didnt resolve the problem with the first try changing the bulb base or plug.
3- If that not shutt off the warning then inspect all tha way on the cabe for open areas rusted cables etc.
4-if you not resolve the problem with that try to find a friend or some of trus t that have the same jeep and the same VC and try to connect it to your vehicle if the warning don't go on may be yor VC is the problem.
