6.5 trouble

We have a 1996 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 at work, has the 6.5 diesel and a 5 speed. 350k miles on the original motor. Biggest repair the motor has had was a new harmonic balancer.

It starts hard in the mornings and stalls while driving often. Lately it has been 70 degrees in the morning and it starts like it's wintertime out. You can be driving along and go slow down to go around a corner and it just dies when you try to accellerate again. But if you stop and shut the motor down, wait 30 seconds or so and start it again it will run normal. Why?

Driving along it will seem to lose power, but if you let your foot off the pedal and then put it back immediately it picks up like crazy. It just doesn't make any sense.

The fuel pumps and injectors were done last fall. The truck has about five or six of its own fuel controllers that we have tried using on the suspicion of them failing, but nothing seems to be the answer.

Any ideas?

Re: 6.5 trouble

Sounds like it is losing compression. Have the compression on it checked. WOW, 350k, great number there, but may be time to get that baby some new life.

How new is the lift pump (on the frame rail below the driver's seat)?

It's the original one that was redone last fall.

It could well be losing compression, but the thing is that it has crazy power when you get on it. It pulls the hell out of whatever is behind it. So I dunno?

When you do get it going in the morning it's only running on maybe 6 or 7 cylinders, then you give it one sharp shot of the pedal and it hits on all eight.

Re: 6.5 trouble

For starters it sounds like your glow plugs need to be tested.....

Second of all - the stalling could be anything....clean the battery terminals (especially the positive cable on the passenger side)....when the engine is running open the brass t valve on the coolant crossover and see if fuel runs out - if it does your lift pump is ok....

Re: 6.5 trouble

I had a similar problem on a '98, auto. It was a farm truck and the screen inside the fuel tank (the sock on the sending unit). All gummed up and full of debris. Dropped the tank, replaced the sending unit/sock and it was like brand new.

Re: 6.5 trouble

Whens the last time you changed the fuel filter? Or like chrisk it could be one or two of your glow plugs bad.
