engine ping and mass air flow sensor

As soon as the weather got hot my chronic engine ping problem came up again. I have a 2004 with the 3.0 engine. In hot weather it starts to ping, when accelerating or going up hills. Last year, the dealer replaced the MAF sensor under warranty. Now unfortunately the truck is past the warranty so I am trying to figure it out on my own.

Anybody have any suggestions about cleaning the MAF sensor on a Ranger? From searching the internet, I get the idea that the sensors pick up debris and then quit reading correctly, which then makes the fuel mixture too lean. There's a lot of dust in my area of the country, so I wouldn't be surprised if the sensor gets dirty.

Have already tried fuel system cleaners, and changing the brand of gas. These make some difference, but the ping is still there.

You can clean the MAF by removing it and using a parts/brake cleaner on it, but be careful not to damage it.

Re: engine ping and mass air flow sensor

Well I cleaned the MAF sensor and so far the ping is gone. After figuring out how to do it, this was a pretty simple task. The sensor to the naked eye appeared to be perfectly clean, but with a 20 power magnifier, I could see a buildup of crud on the sensor wires. Several squirts of contact/brake cleaner got rid of the stuff.

I'll know for sure if it worked when I go up into the mountains this weekend.

Re: engine ping and mass air flow sensor

Here's an update for anyone who might be experiencing the ping problem. Cleaning the MAF sensor completely eliminated the problem for me. I've driven 1300 miles, including a lot of uphill stretches, with no pinging. The engine runs a lot smoother as well.

I've read that Ford does not recommend doing maintenance on the sensor. Seems a good way to sell an expensive part when 10 cents worth of contact cleaner appears to solve the problem. Cleaning the sensor is now going to be an annual routine for me.
