Will 315 fit on stock rim

I recently put a 3" body lift on my truck and I'm planning on buying 315 75 16 BFG A/T tires and I'm just wondering if they will fit on the stock rims? I think my stock rims are 7" wide and the tires are 12.5" wide. On the BFG website it says they recommend at least an 8" wide rim but I've seen Ford F150's drive around with the same tire on stock rims.

Why wouldn't it be safe? What are the risks?

Also, do I need to upgrade my brakes and gear up in the rear? I have a 3.73 open differential now.

Bead failure. Sidewall failure. I've seen guys have tires just pop off from being too wide for the rim, and they just popped them back on.

Re: Will 315 fit on stock rim

01silverado,

Good luck finding a qualified tire store that will actually install 315's on a stock rim. If any of them are smart they wont do it for liability reasons. I put 305's on my 01 silverado and had to buy 8" wide rims. Most recommended 10" wide rims.

Also, are you sure you can fit 315's with only a 3-inch body lift?? I put a 7-inch suspension lift on my truck and still had to cut the front bumper plastic to clear them. I would post a picture but I dont know how?

As for the rear end, remember you need to do both the axles since you are four wheel drive. I put 4.10 with an Auburn gear pro series limited slip differential in mine. I love it. I purchased my parts off ebay new and got good deals.

It is basically back to stock (from 3.73) so I still get about 17 mpg on the highway. However, I sometimes wish I would have gone to the 4.56 gears because I have a travel trailer and the 4.56 would really help on those steep grades. At the time of my installation, I was going for fuel mileage. I personally dont think you need to upgrade your brakes.

Hope this helps.

Re: Will 315 fit on stock rim

The MAX size for a stock alloy wheel is 285x75 . I am putting mine on 8" wheels just because I want a road and mud set that I can swap out at home . Squeezing 315's down to 7" will kill you under the right condition. rob

Re: Will 315 fit on stock rim

That tire is about a 35" right. I wouldnt put it on a 7 inch wide wheel. Just asking for trouble. With only a 3" BL I think you would have to do major, major cutting and trimming to get it to fit. But if thats the way you want to go and dont want to drop the coin on a suspension lift. Here's plan B. Get a set of ford keys and crank your front torsion bars a couple of inches (that is about the max you want to go), any further and you will kill your upper ball joints and cv axles) also will make long term alignment very tough. Out back you could add another blocks to level it out or throw an add a leaf in. Even doing that, I think you will have a some good rubbing but trimming might fix that. You will also want to regear with all of that. 4.10's would be okay, but if your spending the money, you are best to go with 4.56's (yukon's are the best, precision is pretty good, stay away from Genuine) and some type of LSD (G80 LSD in the stock rear diff is a bomb waiting to go off), i.e. eaton, auburn. I say 4.56's over 4.10's because of the added unsprung weight of the tires. The stock tires weighed in at about 40 lbs, most 35's weigh 80+. The higher ratio will compensate for the added weight. A lot more info than you asked for but might help make decisions. My recco, get a suspension lift. run 37's

Re: Will 315 fit on stock rim

too much tire for your rims,
yes on the brake upgrade no matter what rims you use
and what gear you need depends on where you live and what you do with the truck

I live in the mountains so i bouhgt 410 gearsin a locker rear open front diffs, and i have a 5 speed, to pull trailers....you may have different needs..if all you do is drive it around town in a warm climat i ould leave it alone untill you put some real horse power under that hood. ps uy an after market locker just my two sents...jj

As has been said, you can't. Get some new wheels and tires anyway, it'll look better

Re: Will 315 fit on stock rim

Well i ordered the tires on monday at tiretrends.com for 257$ CAN and 23$ shipping per tire and the ups man brought them to me this morning. I went straight to the tire shop to have them put on. All they had to trim was a little bit of the lower valence and a little bit of plastic on the inside of the front driver side fender. Other than that it looks awesome and im glad i didnt go any smaller. I love the stuffed look and the ride is great. The only thing that will be hard to get used to is the speedometer is out by 13 KM.

UPS man brought me a gift:

On my way to the tire shop riding 245s:

After the tire shop riding 315s:

Ya thats what the guy at the tire shop told me except for they might wear prematurely because of the rim being so narrow, but i plan on buying new rims in spring. I sorta like the look of them on stock rims though, too bad theyre not 8" wide. My 245s seem almost low-profile to me now
