Hello, names IceWind. New here to the boards. Im graduating from College this fall and hope to start my IT career in the NorthWest somewhere. My first big purchase im very looking forward is to my new car. I've been driving a 92 Honda Accord since I graduated in High School. I always wanted one, and after having a Ford and a GMC, I can never go back to domestic cars again (know that will get blood boiling, but I have my reasons) Needless to say, I love my Honda. Though its aging its never failed me and though the tuneups are expensive and more frequent for a 10 year old car, I still love. Ive been looking into the Honda Accord Coupe, the Toyota Solora coupe and recently VW Passat. I never thought much of VW hardly until I drove one through a car wash where I work at. I was very impressed with the solid feeling and quality of the car. Not to mention the sylin really said "Futuristic and expensive" Needless to say, im confused so I'd like some personal input on these brands and models from other people. What would you say are the main differences between these companies that define whats good and bad between them. Also, can someone PLEEEASE tell me what the difference between Acura and Honda is? I think the big way i'll know the difference on the cars is to actually test drive them, but I'd like some forward input first to get a general sense of what other drivers have felt about these cars and brands.

Well for you your first question, as far as reliability goes Honda, Toyota, and VW are quite close. As for looks I think the Passat looks better than the other two with the Accord in third. As far as power goes you are looking at about the same.
The difference between Honda and Acura here in the states is mainly the price. Acura is Honda's higher end, sort of like what Lincoln is to Ford. You are going to pay a lot more for an Acura, more than they are worth IMO. I feel the same about Audi, you can buy the similar VW for a lot less. Of the group I would take the VW because they look good, are quite reliable, and aren't that expensive but have that feel. Just my two cents. |

I just went to VW site to look around. I was very humored by their PASSAT section of how to handle "Looking Rich, but not being it" situations. Very funny and makes me think this company is very open minded and not scared to have a little fun with its customers. I guess its weird buying a car from a company that started from Adolf Hitler. Is there a section I can read about the companies history? Actually, all 3 companies history?

Not that I know of. Yeah the Hitler issue has always made me think. I guess as long as they don't have pictures or a statue of him at HQ their good.

After doing some test driving a year ago on the cars you've mentioned (among others) we went with the Accord Sedan. The Honda just felt like a solid ride and they have a wonderful track record for reliability. The Accuras just seemed to pricey.
btw Where in the mid-west are you looking for work?

Interesting. What didn't you like about the Passat or Solora? As far as work, I was hoping in Washington or Oregon to stay in my Mountains but that all depends on what offers I get also..

Realy? Volkswagen reliable as a Honda? My consumer reports magazine is giving them average marks or saying "below par" for the jetta and golf. The new Passats got good rating though. I'm realy hoping this magazine is wrong because I realy like Volkswagens but for now I'll get a Infiniti G20 because the magazines giving it good marks reliability wise and thats important to me. One thing about Volkswagen is they are the safest of the bunch, and I realy like the feel of them. I just checked, Passat got and excellent crash test rating, the highest in family cars. Higher than the Dodge stratus, Honda Accord, toyota camary, chevrolet impala, mazda 626, you name it, it beat it. Volvos weren't listed as family cars, they were listed as upscale cars but the volkswagens, volvos, and saabs all are preaty much the same crash test wise. |

Hmmm never mind about the Passat. I got to look at one up close for the first time. For some reason, the design, just didn't swing me the right way. It also seemed small then what it looks in the pictures. Plus the 4 days made it to "family" looking for me. So now im down to the Honda Accord Coupe and Toyota Solara.
