Re: Big Block Needed

Why not rebuild the 455? What's the goal for the car?

Re: Big Block Needed

TD,

Okay. I just wanted to be sure you hadn't fallen for the "Only a Chevy runs" line...

455Bs are getting scarce. I found two last Winter, and bought one for a customer's project (600 HP). The other one may still be there, but the guy is a bit of a flake. Let me know if you wish to pursue it. It's in Central Virginia.

From a "dollars" point of view, there's not a lot of difference. The cores are going to be high, whether you choose the Chevy or the Buick. You'll probably pay a little more for the BBC core. They use the same connecting rods (for a racer). Other parts, like bearings and gaskets, even "good" pistons, will give the BBC a little advantage. Not like an SBC would, though.

Now, as for power output? No comparison. The Buick is about done at 600 unless you go through a BUNCH of changes to strengthen the block and make the heads "work" better. The BBC is just getting started at this same point. It's conceivable to build a BBC that uses 93 octane gas and can make upwards of 900 HP without adders. If you use a 4-bolt block or an aftermarket performance block, the block is not the weak link in the chain. "Tall-deck" BBCs are very popular these days.

The big drawback to converting the car to the BBC, is if you want it to be a streeter with good "corner manners", BBC will hurt that. It's about 250 lbs. heavier than the 455B. Even using aluminum heads won't help enough to get the "balance" back. As "new", a big block Chevelle wouldn't TOUCH the GS in the corners. But, if drag racing is more important...

Re: Big Block Needed

Hello there. I have a Buick 455 complete except for starter, and it needs a carb rebuild other than that I was told it ran fine. It came out of a 72 electra 225 I was told and it had about 72,000 miles on it. I have never heard the engine run or even made an attempt to start it. I too was going to put it in a 72 skylark but have since decided not to. I live in upstate ny an if u r intereseted drop me a line on here or u can reach me at (315)874-4058 ask for Chris. Thanx
