98 Jimmy A/C on again off again

I've got A 98 Jimmy, 4.3, 2wd. Here's my problem, yesterday heading home from work, I turn on the A/C and it works fine. Then 2 or 3 miles down the road it cuts off. I punch the a/c button and it blinks a few times and nothing happens. It has an "auto" setting that I assume works like the thermostat in the house and I'm wondering if there is a problem with that or if it's some kind of operator error. I can set the fan speed to what I want, select the vents I want and the temp, and still nothing.

I do live in Alabama and it is 100 degrees outside. Heat index of 105+.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks

With automatic controls and a blinking light.
You need to check the body computer for B codes.
You will need a full function scanner to get B codes or a read out on body computer.
It could also be low on freon.
Check the low and high side presure at idle and at 2000 RPM and post back pressure reading.
An say no to them wal mart recharge death kits with the stop leak crap in them.
