355 power(hp, torque??)

a buddy and i just bought a 1986 iroc with a 305 tune port... he gets the motor. i get the shell.... only reason i want it is to drag on the strip. im looking at a 355 and the owner says the motor gets 425hp... which i think is total bull$hit.... its got forged internals, 10:1 domed pistons, i believe stock intake and holley 650 carb. and of coarse bored 30 over.... well what kind of hp and torque are we talkin here? and would this be a good motor to run?

Re: 355 power(hp, torque??)

If it is tuned port, and has stock intake it should not be a carb. And stock tuned port have sucky intakes.

I doubt 425 but you haven't given really any information on the engine to begin to guess.

No, not the 305 motor. He is talking about a seperate motor to drop in the chassis.

425hp is possible out of 355ci motor, but not the stock manifold. Doesn't flow well enough. Now if it had forced induction, it would be a different story. But forged internals is a good start for making a strip motor.

Re: 355 power(hp, torque??)

it may not be 10 to 1... i cant remember but i remember him saying something about pistons being domed. and the car was a 305 tune port, i wanna put a 350( .30 over) to a 355 in the car.. i get the car shell(rolling chassis with tranny.... my buddy wants the motor with the tune port on it. the car is at his house, and he was wanting the computer and wiring harness too. but wouldnt i need the computer and some of the harness, for headlights and turnsignals.. yes i want this to be a drag car, but i'd also like to drive it 35 miles to go race.. will i need the computer to use the stock transmission(speed sensor?) and ignition siwtch, or will i need the computer..and if not is it possible to take out the part of the harness for the injection system?

Re: 355 power(hp, torque??)

if its carb'd it doesnt need the computer..and if its a 86 camaro the trans should only need a TV cable attatched from the engine...and you might have to change the governor(?) that determines the shift points..

something like that, just my 2cents

Re: 355 power(hp, torque??)

yeah it is relatively easy to make a 350 or any rebuilt version of it (355) have well over 400 horsepower. you usually cant use stock heads unless they are chevy truck vortec heads, other than that its usually aftermarket ones especially aluminum heads are popular. also, at least an edelbrock performer rpm intake is needed and a 750 cfm carburetor. If you have all these things, you can easily make that much power, though low end torque will likely suffer a lot. also, i almost forgot the most important, a huge lumpy cam is needed

u r right you can make the power easy with a 355 I got a 500 hp 355, but he will have to change the intake ,heads and the carb ,and get a cam that works well with the rpm range of the intake he gets and the right converter.
