Just a wild hair!!!

My '89 Toyota King Cab 4x4 got rear-ended for the third time in it's life recently (2nd time it's been "totaled"). it's just been sitting in the shop all sad looking because I haven't had time to mess with it! I still love that old truck, I've had it for years. I got a wild notion to go big with the resto this time. bodywork is simple......only the bed was caved-in and I've found a new bed for it. I want to swap out he 22RE for something with more cubic inches. Has anyone out there swapped out a 302 (5.0 L) Ford in a toyota? The ford small block is shorter and narrower than a chevy and I wouldn't have to butcher-up the firewall to allow room for the distributor. (ford dist. is on front of engine) What all (In DETAIL) is necessary for the swap? I know several companies make all the adapters I need. Should I go with an older 302 so I don't have to mess with the ECM and wiring? With an older engine all you need is 12 volts, distributor and coil and your running. With an older engine i'd run a carb also so wiring for the EFI wouldn't be necessary. It has a 5-speed in it now. Would that hold-up to "normal" everyday driving with just an occasional romp on the accelerator? Maybe pulling the boat (Ski Nautique = 6000 lbs.).

I'm just looking for any pro's / con's / advice on swapping out the 22RE with something else. Paint and body work, engine building and light tranny repairs are no problem to me but I've never done much fabrication so i just want to have an idea of what to expect.

Check with Advance Adapters, I think they have a kit for this swap.
Also try Google, it's been done.

Re: Just a wild hair!!!

I would go with a late 80s or early 90s mustang motor and 5spd or go with a
c4 auto tranny there smaller.Just change the intake to fit a carb and make sure to change the water pump to the old style. The newer ones turn in the oppiste direction.I did this with a 83 ford ranger pickup and it ran high 13 at the track .The only other thing to look at is the oil filter location . Had to use a remote filter on the ranger
