dead battery locked out
Heres the problem, I stored my 1998 grand prix gtp over winter.
the battery died, i don't have a door key just a keyless alarm remote. now im locked out. i tried a wire coat hanger to grab the door handle through the window but was unsuccessful. Pulling the door handle does not release the lock. and trying to hook the lock is pretty much impossible. i also tried getting to the battery from underneath the car without any luck. need some help.... please |

Re: dead battery locked out
Welcome to AF.
Sounds like you are in a real predicament. Have tried going in from underneath the front end to see if you can get to the hood latch on the support bar in front of the radiator?

Re: dead battery locked out
You don't have a door key? I have a 2000 (which should be essentially the same car), and the ignition key fits the door. Have you TRIED it?

Re: dead battery locked out
Hmmm... didn't realize there was that much difference between the '98 and '00. Thanks for the correction.
P.S. to the original poster: NEVER rely solely on a wireless remote, whether it be automotive, or any other application. |

His other option if he has access to a battery/charger/jump starter is to connect the positive lead from the charger to the big B+ (12 volt) connection on the starter (not the one on starter solenoid- S input). Ground to any good ground on the engine or frame. Hopefully, he did not disconnect the battery positive or negative cables for storage. The battery should take the charge that way unless it is shot. I have one I got a few yeas ago at AZ for around $45.00. An auto locksmith is another option.

The pos battery cable is at the starter solenoid. See if you can hook a batery charger on there somehow from under car. Some auto services and lock smiths have a unlock tool if all else fails. And some auto parts places sell slim jims or unlock tool kits. Good luck MT.

Re: dead battery locked out
How about this: Call AAA or a locksmith. I know the drivers for AAA are pretty good at getting keys out of locked cars.
Take Care,

Re: dead battery locked out
Or alternatively, you can write down the VIN, and as long as you can show proof of insurance or something proving you own the car, any GM dealership will be able to cut you a door key, unless, of course, the door locks have been changed.
And I didn't know the '98 came with passkey II, I've had a '97 and a '99 GTP, both of them used the ignition key for the doors and the trunk.
