You can bring the car to autozone they will read the codes for free.

But just remember most of them are parts people pulling codes for free. Not trained professional tech/mechanics. Even if they pull a 02-sensor code or another sensor related code it does always mean to replace that sensor and your problem will be fixed. On odb1 ford's, I like the actron CP9110, These are not made anymore, but you can get them on Ebay for about $70, in fact there is one on there now with a Ford and GM cartrage. You can also get a Chrysler and generic odbII cartrage for it. It also pulls ford ABS codes.

It's easy enough to read OBDI codes without a code reader. All you need is a piece of wire and a test light (or use your check-engine-light if it is still working).
I wouldn't waste my money on a reader unless it was very inexpensive.

Code readers are for girls, real men use scan tools. But yeah if you only plan on pulling codes with a scan tool it would be a waste of money.
