97 camry battery cable
I was driving car and it quit. Looked under the hood and the negative cable clamp had partially melted where the cable came undone. Eventually got it to restart to get home.
Had the battery checked , they charged it and put a new neg cable and clamp on. Have not been able to get it to crank and the battery cables and the starter are super hot to the touch. I have been having trouble with the starter clicking for a little while. Could the starter be the problem in making the cable so hot and not starting? Thanks |

Re: 97 camry battery cable
Sure sounds like the starter is the likely culprit. If you are handy you could pull the starter and take it down to have it bench tested. Whether you are handy or not I would quit cranking the engine so you don't ruin the rest of your system it wasn't designed to run hot to the touch.

Re: 97 camry battery cable
idmetro, I'm with you about not trying to start it any more without testing, but a heavy draw by the starter will only damage the starter and the cables to it - nothing else.

Re: 97 camry battery cable
Had the starter tested, it was fried. Put a new one in and she fired right up.
Thanks for the feedback. John |
