ABS/Brake Light Always on, What to do?

The ABS/Brake light is always on (Silverado 1500, 6 Cil, MY 2000), can somebody tell me what is causing it, and what should I do?

mine is the same way since a brake job awhile back , new steel lines all over. ........ 1999 silverado 5.3.

Mines been on for over 3 years. The mechanic said it's one of those chevy flukes.

Jake2775...did the steel lines make a difference?

codelafu...I would bet you fried your ABS pump or at least have lost your ABS system. Do a search on ABS here and you will find what to do. The bad news is if you take it to a dealer it would cost 1800$+ but I fixed mine for under 300$ by reading threads in this forum. I had to take the EBCM off and send it to a guy in the northwest and he rebuilt it. I also got the pump from him. But first you need to figure out what is going on and needs to be replaced.

i dont really understand your question ....... the lines are the same as they always were , just all brand new now. , nothing seems to work any different, and im not one for taking my vehicles to the doctor unless its absolutely life and death., ive ripped apart many items and fixed them myself from reading usefull info on sites like this one and just digging deep into the matter itself.

I thought you meant stainless steel lines instead of the rubber ones. I tried to install Russell SS lines but the threads were different then on my truck and I couldn't use them.

I recently posted about this. I found that the problem was a corroded wire on the EBCM assembly. I was able to cut out the corroded section and solder in a new wire. Then I completely covered the repair with liquid rubber. Problem solved. Light on the dash went out and normal ABS operation was restored. Dealer would have most definitely changed out the whole assembly.

vnotaro : could you elaborate on where the EBCM assembly is located, and give me a few more details on this repair ? i`d be really greatful.

I have an '01 5.3l 4x4. The assembly is located on the drivers side frame rail almost directly under where the driver sits. You can positively identify it by the brake lines going in and out of it. This unit takes input from the wheel speed sensors from the front wheels as well as the sensor in the tailshaft of the tranny for the rear wheels. There are two wires (black and red) that come out of the lower half of this unit and plug into the upper half. The black wire was completely corroded through. These wires are not that easy to get to as they are right up against the frame on the side and the body on top. I considered taking the whole unit down but didn't want to bleed the entire system so I left it on. Remember, wiring can be tricky. IF this is your problem, it may not be as apparent as it was for me. You really need to get your head up there and look around. Or, you may truly have a bad pump assembly in which case you will need to get it replaced or rebuilt. The bottom line is, even if the pump assembly is no good, you should still have normal brake operation, just no ABS. Good luck.

Don't forget to get the stainless steel screws....I had to cut my old ones off because they were so rusty.

im gonna crawl under it and have a look as soon as the rain stops, but i also wanted to add that my ABS light doesnt come on untill i shift into gear and start to move, dont know if this makes any difference or not , also i have NOT got my speed wheel sensor recall done yet. would this make my ABS light come on too ?

If your left and right speed sensors are working but reporting a different voltage then your ABS system will think one wheel is locked when you are going slow...like under 15mph and the ABS pump will turn on which basically releases your brakes. If you are close to something when this happens you'll probably run in to it. I had some really close calls and almost hit several cars before I got it fixed...I replaced the whole wheel hub...this was before the recall.
If this is happening to you let me know and I'll tell you how to test the sensors.
