struts?

my car's been ridin low lately and clunky over bumps so we're thinkin the struts are bad....now i've heard that is a semi-dangerous and expensive job, is that pretty accurate? its not something most people could do at home? how much do you think it would cost at a garage for the rears? thanks

Re: struts?

Mileage and year Grand Prix?

I do struts (front & rear) in my garage at home so it can be a DIY job. But you need to know what you are doing and special tools are required like the strut coil spring compressor. However, safety is important.

Where strut work may be expensive is when you find worn out parts like upper strut mount/load bearings or rubber bushings in addition to the cost of each strut. Shops that replace struts charge around $35 - $40 per wheel depending on where you live.

Sounds like hp aftermarket like Koni or GMPP.

I use KYB GR2 aftermarket struts in my GTP. Around $60 each or less. The ride is excellent and stiffer than stock.

The only strut I would pass on are Monroes to include their mounting hardware like upper strut mounts.

Re: struts?

I agree with Bob on the Monroe, especially their Sensa-trac line, and Gabriels are no better. I've heard that Gabriel's "Ultra" series are not bad, but I have no practical experience with them. KYB's are a nice unit.

Re: struts?

The Gabriel Ultras are surprising. Good price and they definitely work fine. But I have never tried them on a Grand Prix. Got 4 for the the old ladies '99 Regal LS and even took a 1200 mile round trip to Wichita Falls, TX. No funny noises and good ride. Alignment right on.

The KYBs are more of a performance strut. I like the stiffer ride. Helps with weight transfer at the strip.

Re: struts?

Monroe is horrible do not use them I have had nothing but problems with them along with a host of other people. I am actually in the process of removing them and exchanging them out with the KYB. The kyb's are a bit more expensive but worth it.
