92 SL Manual Transmission Problems

I have a 92 SL with 145k that is having tranny problems. It is very difficult to get into gear, double clutching dosen't help. About 2" of looseness in the clutch pedal, and starts slipping in 2nd and 3rd when going up steep hills.

Do I need a rebuld, or is this an issue with the slave cylinder? What does a rebuild go for these days?

THANKS!!

Re: 92 SL Manual Transmission Problems

You need a new clutch set along with either a clutch slave or clutch master cylinder or both cylinders. You don't need the transmission rebuilt.

Thanks Cat Fuzz, is this what you mean by a clutch set?

The LuK RepSet - More than just a clutch • New clutch, disc, release bearing, pilot bearing, spline tool and lubricant.

Yep, but that doesn't include any hydraulics you may need.

Re: 92 SL Manual Transmission Problems

One last question.

I can get the clutch rebuild kit for approx. $100, and the pre-bled slave and master cylinder for approx. $125. Labor on the clutch will be approx. $500 and $60 for the hydraulics.

Is it worth trying the hydraulics first? Or am I just delaying the inevitable.

Thanks.

Re: 92 SL Manual Transmission Problems

If its slipping, you need to do the clutch too.

saturn(and i) suggest you replace the clutch and hydraulics together.if for nothing else so you don't have to do the job a second time.

Re: 92 SL Manual Transmission Problems

The loose pedel/free play is probably related to the slave/master cylinder, one sealed unit on saturn "S" cars. The slipping is in the pressure plate and friction disk (clutch kit) and throw a release bearing in it while you are there. Just my thoughts take them as you will
P.S. 10 years experiance as a saturn tech.
