4 Lo problem

96 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 5.2 Liter

Since I got my jeep I have not been able to engage the 4 wheel drive lo. I go into neutral, then pull the leaver down for 4 lo. The screen says Lo, so I shift into drive and start moving. Within 15 seconds it's like it shifts into nuetral by itself. The moniter shows that I'm out of low and seemingly in nuetral. Also when pulling the 4wheel drive stick back, I have to do it slowly so I get the perfect spot. If I got back to far it seems to shift into neutral, if I do it slowly enough I can get it to lock into Lo but then i get the problems stated above. Any ideas?

Re: 4 Lo problem

sounds like the linkage is out of adustment. it's not going into lo completely and coming out under pressure of drive train. OR the shift gate is broke at the low position and not locking the lever at the lo position. gate is in console under the shift plate panel on console around the lever. its made of plastic. rare for it to brake but if years of hammering in out of shift positions could have worn the edge off or broke it. more likely the linkage is out.
hope this helped.

Re: 4 Lo problem

Is it reasonable to adjust the linkage or do i need to take it to a mechanic.

Re: 4 Lo problem

you can do it. but the dealer uses a shim block the to get it exact. doing it your self gets it close. if the gate is worn you will want it as close as possible. get a hanes manual and see for yourself if you want to do it. not that hard.
