spray paint primer

Hey guys, Im going to spray part of my civic the area around one of the wheel arches is starting to rust, when i went to halfords they didnt have the colour i need but it did say in the book that i need red primer and when i went to another place they said to use grey, will the red primer give a closer colour match? My friend has a civic with the same paint code and he used grey and it looks a bit darker than the original paint. Any ideas? Grey or red?

Re: spray paint primer

Are you talking about inside the wheel wells? Cause in that case i'd say use black rustoleum paint...

Re: spray paint primer

Sand the rust off first... then primer... then sand... then primer... then sand... repeat until satisfied... then paint match to color of body or have done professionally...

Re: spray paint primer

It all really depends on what paint your using, I have seen red primer not color match as good as a grey primer. Is it only surface rust right now, hasn't started eating anything yet? If so, yea just sand the rust off, prime, sand, etc. As for the rattle cans, if your just going for a quick temp fix, its better than nothing, if your going for a fix and getting it color matched, just take it to a pro and have them do it, they will get the correct primer for their paint and get it fixed and matched correctly.....granted if they are actually professionals.

Re: spray paint primer

You could always do what this guy did and paint your whole car for about $50. See post on first page by 69chargeryeehaa:

Re: spray paint primer

Yeah I use black rustoleum for all undercarriage/wheel-well spots. And like stated before, always sand off most of the rust first. If its on the actual 'body' of the car, I think you should just try to color match a spray paint to your car (its not too hard with the amount of colors they sell these days), and skip the primer (but do sand the rust!). With just bare metal I dont think you will see a contrast from where you sprayed to the actual car, primer I only use if I applied any kind of Bondo, because in that case you would see a contrast. Be sure to mask so you dont paint over the 'ok' part of your body that still has the car paint, otherwise you'll be able to notice the difference in gloss. If your any good with a spray can you dont have to be AS careful and you can fade is slightly, thats what I do and people dont know the difference from the metallic blue rustoleum to the actual paint. Good luck. A rust free car is a happy car!
