Red face Transmition 96 3.0

Dear Friends, My 96 Taurus (sedan 3.0)'s transmition started giving me trouble. Two year (20 000 miles) ago I had a complete overhaul of the gearbox and has been working very nicely. But now it seems that the first is not engaging! Could it be that the sensor is gone? Can I drive it to the garage or do I have to tow it?
I will appreciate your comments.

Has your SES (Service Engine Soon) light came on?

A lot of times if it is a component issue and not just a general failure it will trigger a code.

Re: Transmition 96 3.0

Hi Mike, no the SES light did not come on. The reverse engages perfect and it looks like when I put it into D it gets into a higher gear (second or third) so if I try to go it doesn't have much power, so going up hill is very difficult!

Re: Transmition 96 3.0

It sounds like the torque convertor is not locking up.

It could be a transmission Range sensor which effects the EGR system, idle speed control and torque converter lockup.

Thats just a guess and worth every cent you paid for it.

The only thing is it will usually throw a code

Re: Transmition 96 3.0

Thanks Mike, I agree with you that is what it sounds like. Is it safe to drive it to the garage or should I tow it?
Brokenantimatter: I don't know if AX4S or AX4N?
Thanks for your help! Have a great weekend!

How can I find what kind it is? AX4S or AX4N?
Took it to the garage and they want to replace the whole trans is more that $2500. I don't think I'll spend so much.
Any suggestions?

I think you can find the info on the plate or sticker that's located on the door jamb, I forget which door... it may say which trans, ax4s or ax4n, or it may have a code number... unfortunately, trans are a sore spot for the Taurus..

If the car acts like it is not going into first gear, I don't think the locking torque converter would be the issue. The locking torque converter only locks when cruising over 35 mph for more than some time (like 5 seconds or something) if I recall correctly.

Can you determine if 4th gear works by watching the tachometer at highway speeds? If it appears that 4th gear is not engaging either, you may have a stuck Shift Solenoid B (SSB). A scan tool capable of monitoring the transmission datastream should be able to help determine the problem.
