Water Pump Pulley

I'm having issues with changing my water pump, it states in my chiltons that I can remove the pully, Leaving the original "housing" on the car and can "loosen" the bolts... except...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But when I try to remove the pully... the whole thing turns, making it impossible for me to remove the pully let alone loosen it

Does anyone have any suggestions as to getting this off?

It's in "outside" indirect contact with the belt and the belt is as tight as its supposed to be (70 lbs) but it in no way is tight enough to stop the pulley from turning.

Now that I've bored you with every possible angle, I hope someone knows what I'm asking about...
If not I can give more detail!

thank you for all your help everyone!

Re: Water Pump Pulley

It would be helpful to post your year, model and engine size assuming this is a Grand Am so others can weigh-in to help.

Re: Water Pump Pulley

Try putting additional pressure on the belt by prying against the tensioner, this may work, if not put a thin screwdrive across and between the bolt heads to hold the pulley, problem there is you run out of bolts after 2 come out.

Re: Water Pump Pulley

naw... didn't work... no matter how much pressure I put on the belt/tensioner the thing still slips.

I would REALLY hate to have to fix the other thing that's wrong with it, fill it with water/coolant and then drive it to the closest garage. Its a "Bobby & Steve's" garage so you know it'd be mega bucks for something so silly as loosening some bolts!

But it looks like that's what I'm gonna have to do.

Thank you all anyway...!

Re: Water Pump Pulley

its easy to remov that pully.

Like Max said you need to hold the pully with something on thier blot heads.

You hav four blots, hold the screwdriver so it locks in(criss croos[diagonal]) and you should be able to loosen them.

I usually loosen all of them before I removed any of the bolts.
Hope that helped!

Re: Water Pump Pulley

Ya,
sometimes I even use a couple wrenches, little trickier but works as well.
