another 4l60e prob-i need help please
i have a 99 2dr 2wd tahoe. it has 97k miles on it. i just had the tranny rebuilt aug. of last year. it has developed 2 problems. i'm not sure if they are related or not. 1) when i try to accelerate quickly while cruising, it revs up but the power is not getting to the wheels. it like it went into neutral. when the rpm's come back down i can accelerate like normal. 2) while cruising if a small load is demanded like a slight incline the truck surges like it is trying to decide if it should downshift.

any SES light? could be a engine performance issue. You could just be down shifting into a lower gear that needed to do a lack of power.

Did they replace the torque converter? It sounds like its not locking up.

Re: another 4l60e prob-i need help please
It sounds like a TC to me. Does it sounds like its dropping down to another gear? Or does is sounds like something is slipping.
I have had a 4L60E and a 700R4 rebuilt in the past and I always had them change the TC. Depending on what happened to the tranny, you could have debris in the TC that could return to the tranny later. It just sounds like your TC is not locking up. By both of your examples, thats what it sounds like.

the reason for the rebuild was the 3-4 clutch pack was going out. no weird noises when the peoblems occur.

Have you had it back to a shop since you started this post?

Do the same symptoms occur if you manually shift and downshift ?

Re: another 4l60e prob-i need help please
two things... I'm guessing you've checked the fluid while idling in park?
The slipping does sound like the TC not engaging, or possibly bad clutches (for whatever gears it's slipping in) I had a 94 2 door yukon, and we had it completely rebuilt, it was doing the exact same thing, and it finally got to the point to where i couldn't even really drive it because it slipped so badly. Its a progressive thing, the clutches and TC just lose friction over time, just like anything else. the SECOND thing...if it is downshifting at really weird times, almost randomly, or not even shifting into 2nd or 3rd at all, that would be your speed sensor. Mine did that as well. It also started out in second gear alot. I had to cruise allll the way across town to the tranny shop in 1st gear. talk about fun haha... The sensor is generally about 80bucks. I figured it was really hard to get to, possibly inside (i think there MIGHT be another one inside...) but I watched the guy put it in, and all he did was unscrew the old one, and swrew the new one in. BAM. 50 bucks, just for that. Live and learn, I suppose... hope all that rambling helped! |

Re: another 4l60e prob-i need help please
oh, one more thing...
like swp said, the old TC will have lots of metal shavings that will get into the new transmission, and eat up your new clutches faster than an etheopian with a hotdog. ALWAYS replace the TC! its not worth the 100 or so (you can find em cheaper) bucks you save now compared to the $____ you'll have to spend to get new clutches put in a little bit down the road. New filters are also very important. |

Re: another 4l60e prob-i need help please
Its not a shifting problem, its a slipping problem.
If nothing else, take it to a different tranny shop for a look. Im still putting my money on the TC.
