Frame Mounts- 94 Bonnie SSE

I want to describe a condition that occurred on my 94 Bonnie that could have been very serious. Luckily it wasn’t.

Someone please correct me if I am using the wrong automotive terms so all understand and check out their own vehicles if they desire to do so.

The Rear Frame Mounts on both sides of the car, two(2) on each side, let loose while the car was being driven. My mechanic says that the lower washers (under the frame insulators) rusted away. When this happened all steering was lost as something must have come disconnected as the frame mounts dropped about 6” down. Thus the car went were ever it wanted to go and luckily it was into a curb at a very slow rate of speed, the brakes worked, but you can just imagine what would have happened at highway speeds.

I live where we have a lot of snow and of course a lot of salt on the streets. I also spray under the car every time I wash the car to help get rid of the salt build up , but it still happened to me.

You can see these mounts by looking directly behind the front wheels. I do believe there is one on each side in the front also.

Anyone else had such an experience?

I don't want to say it's "common", but it can happen on any car with a subframe, especially in a state that uses salt on the roads in the winter. If you get a strange clunk when you turn or hit a bump (especially if you feel it under your feet), get those sub-frame bushings checked.
