need help with tyres

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2000 3 series, the tyres keep scrubbing out... I have 17 inch wheels with 45 series tyres... The guards have already been lipped, my tyres are getting eaten away.. Do you think if i go to 40 series it would help... what should I do, I dont want to raise the car. I like it low... I need help... These tyres are to expensive for me to replace them every few months.

Tires

Normally the tire size is as follows. As 17" the 45 series usually goes on the front with a smaller tire in width. The reverse for the rears. For example:

225X45X17 in the front
245X40X17 in the rears

The wider tire stablelizes the rear end but maintains the overall circumfrence of both front and rear. Having the same size tires with different ratios is a little questionable. This may sound silly or there is not intension to be rude. Can you double check the sizaes again. How did you end up with these tires and placement on your car?

I definately have the 235 40 series on the front and the 235 45 series on the back..

The way I came about this is, I had the 235 40 series on the front and the back, my car was very very low.. The rear scrubbed out so much I had to replace the 2 rear tyres. When they were replaced, they were replaced with the 235 45 series... Why... I dont know.. My car now has been raised a little. but still scrubs.

Tires

Questions:
1) Did you buy this car new?
2) If not do you know if the car has been lowered?
3) If it has been lowered, was the shocks changed when the springs?
4) Have you shocks been checked?

Your tire problem sounds suspicious to me. You should not be having that problem. 235X40X17 is a standard option tire for that year, series BMW

You did not say which 3 series you have so checked at Tire Rack on optional 17" sizes.

yes i bought the car brand new 2 years ago..

It has been lowered, only the springs were changed... I have since lifted it up a bit so it no longer sits as low but still has the problem of scrubbing. I havent had the shocks tested yet... maybe i should. I have now posted a pic of my car... have a look..

Tires

Your picture did not show with your PM. I am almost sure it's your shocks. They are blown, it happens all the time when springa alone are done. It also depends on the springs and how much of a drop it gives. You can not successufully lower your car with springs alone fro any length of time. These cars are not "JAP" cars. They are fairly heavy.

Get your shocks checked or better yet change them to some "GOOD" performance shocks. eg Tokico, Bilstein or Koni. What brand of springs did you put on? It would be best to get shocks that match the springs.
