I have a '95 Max and it starts fine, but after a few minutes the engine just dies. I turn it over again, sometimes it hesitates, sometimes it starts right back up, but it always dies again. If I'm able to get going 55 or better, it still tries to die, but an accelerator pump or two and I can keep it going. I've replaced all six injectors with new Bosch, crank position sensor(both), all new coilpacks and sparkplugs. I have the original ECU and a replacement, it does the same exact thing with both. Any ideas out there?

check for air leaks in the intake hose after the air flow meter
Ie broken hose ,cracks etc if so replace hose |

Re: 1995 Max, engine dies irregularly but always
Good try sparkeykev, but no cigar. I assume you were referring to the accordion styled, 3 to 4 to 5 inch hose that attaches to the intake manifold. I inspected it and used vinyl repair to dot over anything that might become a crack or break. My Maxi is still shutting off after a few minutes running. Once again, it does start back up, sometimes imediately and sometimes it takes a little accelerator persuasion.

Re: 1995 Max, engine dies irregularly but always
There is a bulletin on wires possibly breaking on the engine harness witch can cause stalling and no start conditions.. where you want to check the harness is on the Passenger side of the Vech . Back by the firewall where you see the harness bend , wiggle and twist all along the harness while the car is running , by shaking the harness , the vech may stall . if it does restart it and shake harness in same location it stalled before if you can make it stall again by shaking harness, then thats the location you want to look into the see if you can find any broken wires. Careful though, There is some wires that they Call shielded wires and can not be repaired . Only replaced. gl

Good point. Didint know about the bulletin, have u got bulletin no.??
Any wire may be corrected by cuttin/resoldering because theres no hi-speed datacables (where signals may degrade too much). |

Re: 1995 Max, engine dies irregularly but always
mine did the same thing. Mine did not throw any codes either. After replacing just about everyting I could think of I had to replace my MAF sensor. This did the trick and my car has been running great ever since.

Re: 1995 Max, engine dies irregularly but always
This is going to blow your mind. Think thermal. I replaced the thermostat. After having Firestone check to see if I was missing codes, they picked up two. A Knock sensor and a thermal sensor code. I changed the thermostat. Now that didn't get out the occasional hesitation during acceleration, but it did stop the shutting off. I disconnected the MAF and the problem remained. I disconnected the knock sensor, no change, but as soon as I replaced the thermostat, it stopped shutting off. I'm going to change the remaining engine related sensors to try and remove the remaining sluggishness issue, but I'm rolling because I changed the thermostat. I'd have never guessed that a damaged thermostat, without running the temperature up noticeably high would cause the car to shut down consistantly.

Re: 1995 Max, engine dies irregularly but always
Update......
I found what was the root cause of the shutting down after my Maxi warmed up and it also explains why replacing the thermostat effected it. The problem was a bad "Coolant Temperature Sensor". I replaced that and all my shutdown and hesitation during acceleration problems went away. Most likely, when I replaced the thermostat, it helped the bad sensor. |

Re: 1995 Max, engine dies irregularly but always
Disconnect and tst if u can reproduce 'the shutdown' by taking the sensor connector out. No shutdown... hi stuttering idle maybe?
