Blower fuse blows after 3-5 minutes

Sunfire 2.4L convertible 1998.

Blower fires just fine for 3-5 minutes after replacing fuse, then fuse blows. It's the BLO fuse under the hood. Doesn't seem like a short, I'd expect a short to cause it to blow out right away.

Any idea on what to check or try? Any chance a flaky resistor could cause this? Am I correct about it likely not being a short?

Re: Blower fuse blows after 3-5 minutes

Could it be the blower motor itself? Any way to test?

well at least take it all out and see what it looks like, you could always try a junk yard, maybe $5. just for shits and grins

Re: Blower fuse blows after 3-5 minutes

take like a 9v battery and some wire with you, and try it out in the yard first though. it will not go very fast but fast enough to tell if it is shot or not

Re: Blower fuse blows after 3-5 minutes

I know these cars are prone to the resistor going bad that is located in the air flow inside the plastic duct housing down stream from the fan. This is accessible from under the dash (pass side I think) and is identified by what looks like an electrical sensor plugged into the duct. It is held in place by two screws and looks like a printed circuit board when removed. Since it is located in the air flow it has a tendency to get coroded over time. It affects the fan speeds and usually results in the loss of one or more fan speed settings. I dont know if all your fan speeds work or not but it may be a possible source of trouble. I know alot of people who had to change out this sensor because of fan speed issues. Note the fan should still be on at its lowest setting unless the climate selector switch is set to off.

Hope this helps you, if not, someone else with fan speed issues.
