01 Cherokee Sport, Dash flashing Code

Please Help.

Periodically, the lights on my Cherokee begin flashing in a patterned morse-code-like manner. The lights involved are the radio, the odometer, the parking lights and the brake lights (maybe a couple others). There seems to be no clear trigger to indicate why it starts, but it often starts up when the truck is running and continues after it has been turned off. By the way, the engine light has never come on while this is happening, before or after.

The start of all of this seems to coincide with a problem I had with a small leak in the fuel air pressure system (forgive my description, I"m a banker). The check engine light was on and Jeep would blink the code when prompted, so I took it to Auto Zone to get more info. They told me it was likely a leaking gas cap. So I replaced that, which didn't work and I ultimately went back to the original one. But the engine light never came back on.

Are these two things related? If so, why doesn't the check engine light come on like it did originally? Would it be related to the fact that there is a leak in my evaporator core (I've been told, gotta love those Jeeps!)?
