newb question from....... well... a newb.

i do talk big i guess so forgive that but i do my best to follow up..

as some of you may know, i look forward to swapping a grand prix mclaren 3.1 turbo engine into the Lier. i hear its a helluva task.

my question is about tuning.

i've heard hp tuners this, apexi that...

what exactly is it?

i have a rough understanding of how engines work mostly from listening to others' conversations and experience when my car needs work. i pick up on things quickly and appreciate your patience trying to help me understand things.

so yea just for now, i'll ask whats tuning and what does it do?

if anybody knows their shit and has AIM and is on kinda often, leave your contact so i can ask you things (i won't bug you all the time, maybe once a week)

mine is: extrememusicmd

thankz

Re: newb question from....... well... a newb.

What year is your J-Car? It makes a difference, since the control schemes are quite a bit different across the years.

"Tuning" is generally a reprogramming of hte ECM/PCM to enhance operation with factory parts or tailor operation to modifications. Speed/density control schemes on older TBI and some MPFI cars will almost require changes when a different cam profile, different intake, or head porting/changes are made. Different exhaust systems may benefit from reprogramming, but don't usually require it for satisfactory operation. Changes in ignition timing, volumetric efficiency, load variable, and power enrichment tables can be beneficial to even stock engines, but may be necessary for modified engines. Changing TCC lockup points, fan control temperatures, temperature thresholds for control events allowing a different thermostat, fuel and ignition cutoff points, decel control and start enrichment might also be helpful. On later systems,. changes in shift points are also possible.

Re: newb question from....... well... a newb.

I've been burned many, many times before by assuming a signature had anything to do with the questions being asked, so I always ask. I have six vehicles, and could be asking about any one of them at any time. Just wanted to be sure.

An '89 will require a '727 ECM, a 2 BAR MAP, base programming for a turbo car, and it would be really easier if you could grab the ECM and engine wiring harness alng with the engine and trans.
