Some observations on the 350Z performance.

As I read through the first batch of 350Z reviews, 2 other cars come to mind, both with almost the exact same performance numbers as the new Z - the Porsche Boxter S and the E36 M3. If you've read the mags over the last couple of years, you know that both of these cars were constantly included in comparison tests that they seemingly had no business being in - due presumably to some intangible qualities that they possesed which weren't easily ignored. The new Z strikes me as fitting into the exact same place in the automotive heirarchy. But in the case of the Z, in terms of price/performance, it can also keep the other high performance cars honest in a way that no $55K Porsche ever could.

Ok, confession time. I'm leaning towards picking up a used E36 M3. What can I say, just like there are Nissan guys, there are BMW guys. But I've got to say that the 350Z is making the decision to buy any used car much more difficult than I had anticipated. It's a very exciting car, and best of luck to all of you who are to be among the first to get them.

I think the Z is quicker than the E36 M3.

I'd say the 0-60 times will be close, with the quarter mile going to the 350Z. Like I said, I think the Z looks to be a stellar performer and bargain - were it not the first year of production, I'd give it more serious consideration.

Tell me what is the biggest thing I should be worried about in first year production models.

Or tell me a couple.

How bad could it be?

Thanks

There's no doubt that Nissan builds great, reliable cars. Both their FM platform and VQ engine have been in service for a bit, though not in as high a state of tune as in the Z. First year production cars just tend to have quirks - even from companies blessed with the best engineering around. Whether it's the camber and tire wear on the original NSX's or the engine failures on the new E46 M3. You never really know what to expect, but in the case of nissan, they seem to have spent alot of time in development so hopefully that will show.

Thanks matti....

I have read that Nissan will not let this vehicle on the street without having first broken every inch of it down beforehand.

Yes, I do know about first year model troubles....even to the extent of sending out certifiable "lemons".

But for me, waiting a few seasons for a car to shake down, is not where I'm at.

Hopefully, I'll only have to get past the rear wheel drive train, which doesn't thrill an amateur like me....and that little problem of "major" blind spots when looking over your shoulder.

I've read on this board that some hate the looks of this car.

I'm not one of them!

I'm buying this car primarily due to it's looks. Of course that does say something about me.
