Question 1.6 possibilities

Ok, I don't know if anybody remembers me but I have a 90 ST that I had blown a head gasket on, replaced a bunch of stuff, and it wouldn't start...
well thanks for your input. I did finally get it running. Turns out there were two things wrong. The timing WAS off and the new distributor cap I bought didn't come w/ a rotor. Duh!! Anyway, now that I've got it running I'm wondering 2 things. 1st what's the fastest way to locate a vaccumm leak.. I can hear it real bad from the intake when it's idling and when I first upshift on each gear unless I punch it. 2nd what kinds of options do I have as far as upgrading my 1.6 goes? Is it possible to get anywhere near 300hp w/ this motor w/o having to buy a turbo?

Re: 1.6 possibilities

well there is no way a 4afe is getting 300hp n/a. 300 is alot for any n/a 4cyl but the 4afe simply does not have the aftermarket support for that. your best bet as far as upgrading is ditching the 4afe and swapping in a 4agze or 20v 4age. or you can do a 4afe/4agze hybrid. pm 91celicast, he knows all about the st and its possibilities.

Re: 1.6 possibilities

to get 300hp from this motor it would need to be able to rev to 15K rpms, lol. About the vacum leak, you can try taking the stuff you use to blow bubbles or soapy water and drip it over each hose and if bubbles start to appear you got a leak.

Re: 1.6 possibilities

actually both of you will be surprised to hear this, but your wrong

theres a guy over on cnet that has a DYNO PROVEN 500+WHP 4afe, yes 4afe, not 4agze or 20v 4age, but a 4afe....has hella money into it but still (and a gt35r w 25+psi) his name is dasorcha if you wanna look it up

yea the bubbly soap thing works, also just look at the vacum diagram and trace all the lines....you should do a vaccum check, and should be pullin over 20hg at idel (i pull 21) first to know its a vaccum leak

Lightbulb Re: 1.6 possibilities

Well in that case does anybody know where I can come across a CHEAP but reliable turbo? And on that vaccum leak... When I was replacing all that stuff a few months back I had noticed that the far right exhaust manifold bolt was missing, well I just assumed it was overlooked by the last person to do engine work on the car before I bought it but when I started to put the manifold back on I realized that unfortunately the reason that the bolt wasn't there was because the hole on the head was stripped out. I thought...no big deal just tap it out and stick the bolt in there..........HA!!!! Much to my suprise rethreading aluminum after the threads have already been flared is impossible because at that point the aluminum in the hole is so weak that it will just strip out again as soon as you try to tighten the bolt thus creating a fairly major exaust leak hence (this conclusion after consulting several proffesionals) the reason for my damn head gasket blowing in the first place. So anyways I was looking around under the hood shortly after posting this thread just to make sure everything was ok and that's when I saw the bolt doing a balancing act on my alternator. So.........looks like I have an excuse to give my fiance' to spend more money and replace a whole bunch of stuff again . Gonna buy a new head and bolts, new struts, I'm considering converting the stock rear drum brakes to discs, get that pesky a/c working again (been putting that off for a while), and replace the clutch and transmission. SO if anybody knows about that turbo (and the manifold to go w/ it) let me know so I can do that @ the same time I've got the head off.

Re: 1.6 possibilities

do some research on what all componets are in a turbo system. read the sticky "read this if you want to turbo your celica" at the top of this forum.
