Twincharged Motor

I've been facinated by this car (VW Golf T/C) since I first heard about it. It is both (yes both) turbo and supercharged. A turbo for high end power and the s/c for low end power. When you hear that you immediately think performance. Yes it could be used for performance purposes which I think would be phenominal since turbo lag doesn't exist but you still have the perk of having that high end power. So you get to have your cake and eat it too. But in this case it's main purpose is to be an econo box. It delivers decient performance but still achieves 46 mpg and 38 in city. We recently had a discussion about alternatives for fuel. Well, this could be a step forward even though it would still require gas instead of hydrogen or any other alternative. And really, I hope to see this in more cars to come and to eventually see it come to the United States. But as of now, I haven't heard anyone else making plans to use this technology.

Here are some pics to better show how it works:

Re: Twincharged Motor

Technology is great. Some say that this technology will eventually replace all the turbo-diesel econoboxes in Europe. Bring it to America.

Re: Twincharged Motor

twinchargers are pretty sick, nissan has had twincharged motors before, the nissan march superturbo.
here's a pic of the motor:

i may be wrong but i think lancia was the first company ever to use it in a production car. hopefully VW managed to succeed where most others failed in making the transition from supercharger to turbo nice and smooth.

GET ER DONE! then go to the gas station, GET ER DONE, then go to the gas station, get er done, then go to the gast station, god damn gas, go to the gas station. . .

Pushrod V8s are a slowly dieing breed in performance cars. Gas prices are getting to high to pay for 300 HP that gets 15MPG, when you can get 300HP and 25 MPG out of a 4 cylinder.

You might get the same HP but you can't get the same torque.
In that case the torque will win races.

He's comparing 300 HP cars ...

... you think a typical 300 HP V8 has a better race advantage over a 300 HP 4-cylinder?

Re: Twincharged Motor

Man stuff it! As long as old men need Viagra and teenagers need A.D.D. meds I will have more then enough money for gas! As long as ricers and refugies think a stock 3.5 liter 350Z can take a stock 6.0 liter GTO I will have enough money for gas!
As long as dessprate rick old widows find me attractive I WILL HAVE MORE THEN ENOUGH MONEY FOR GAS!

so bring it on Jihad! bring on the gas prices! i got your coins right here between me nutz!

........okay I was obvioulsy kidding about the twincharger. Me and Gotian have talked about it before and we know of one guy who had a twin charged Mini Cooper S. I like the idea and hell yes I think its a brilliant solution to the economy problems. I like this one much better then the low-power econo hybrids. At least here you save and make HP all at the same time.

Re: Twincharged Motor

GM is doing the same thing, but starting out with a diesel. It's going to be based on the Ecotec platform and will get around 50 or so mpg on the highway. It will also have a good amount over 200 hp.

Re: Twincharged Motor

I believe that a car called the Koenig Competition had that technology in the past. It was considered to be very fast at the time. They changed it over to a twin turbocharged motor though. I'd imagine there must be some pitfalls to having both a supercharger and a turbocharger.

Still it looks like cool technology. Kinda slow though.

Re: Twincharged Motor

ummm... umm I would take the 300hp rice burner over a 300hp muscle car any day and Im a domestic man myself. Think about it 300HP CRX 1800 LBs or 300HP Camaro 3300 LBs simple power to weight advantage.Torque will only get you moving 0-60 but the high end is wat is going to finish out on top. I mean I have seen a 222HP CRX run extremely low 12s in the 1/4mile so Horse power isnt everything, its a big portion of the equation but it isnt everything, especially if you have soo mush torque that you simply melt the tires right off the rim!!

That would be cool to do to the MR2. Has anyone heard even any discussion about brining out twincharger kits for performance purposes? Damn, I bet that would be a chunk a change...lol.
