Lightbulb 97 Golf - Automatic Transmission Help

I need a knowledgeable VW tech to help me with this problem.

My '97 Golf (CLK) transmission is blown. I have located a (EVC or ECV) low mileage tranny out of a '99 with it's original TCM. My VW dealer says it won't work and has to be a CLK tranny or it won't bolt-in. The person that wants to sell me the '99 transmission says it will work as long as I use the mating TCM. Who is right, is the question.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks, Richard
