crakshaft bolt
Hi
I'm working on my daugther's 1995 Contour 4 cylinders to replace the water pump. I"m trying ( without succes) to remove the crankshaft bolt but so far was unable to remove it. I'm using an air impact ( not a professional tool), but the bolt doesn't unscrewed yet. Is that possible that this bolt to be unscrewed clockwise? Or is that because my air gun is not appropriate to remove this bolt? |

Re: crakshaft bolt
Do you have a repair manual? Do you really need to remove the crank shaft pulley? Check out the below link.

Re: crakshaft bolt
Put a breakerbar with impact socket on bolt. Now wedge the breakerbar and go turn the engine over.Works every time.I just did this on a 95 contour 2.0.

no you dont lol, you can use a wrench and rest it on something then try to start the motor, the wrench will break the bolt loose, thats how i did my pully.

Re: crakshaft bolt
you most probably have to take it off.
cranking the engine and wedging a breaker bar and socket sometimes work. take note of the rotation of the engine. it has to oppose the unscrewing of the bolt. But if the bolt is too stubborn, you'd have to give it a couple of solid blows. the starter motor's power sometimes isn't enough. use a heavy hammer so you don't wear down the bolt and your tools. if you use a light hammer, it will take you longer and with more blows, as against a heavy one with fewer blows. use a breaker bar or that thing which allows the handle to slide to and from... it's stiffer... the shorter one. stop the shaft from rotating. try locking the rotation at the flywheel with something. you'd have to take the starter motor off.... yeah.. it's like that.lol. i'm pretty sure it doesn't unscrew in a clockwise direction. i think only electric fans have that. it's probably just stuck. use a lot of lubricant and be patient. had the same problem with one of the cars I repaired. took me hours to get it off.tell me if you pull it off just so i know. thanks! |

Re: crakshaft bolt
i was about to say it... great trick. Ive done it a few times.
manual recommends removing the starter, jamming gears and then the bolt will come loose. This idea is better. Just make sure the plugs are out/disconnected. |
