Question 99 Wrangler axle ratio

I have a 99 Wrangler Sport. I am interested in knowing about the axle ratio in this Jeep. I have gotten mixed specs as far as the axle ratio goes. Does anyone know the factory axle ratio or can advise me where to look for a code that will tell me?

Re: 99 Wrangler axle ratio

Just look at the metal tag on the outside of the diff cover. What size engine does your jeep have?

As stated above, there is a metal tag on the diff cover that has the ratio on it. It will probably be either 3.07 or 3.73 but may possibly be 3.55. If its an automatic it will have 3.07s, if its a stick it will have either 3.73s or 3.55s.

Re: 99 Wrangler axle ratio

It is the 4.0L with a 5 speed. I didn't know about the tag. I will go check on that right now. Will let you know what I find.

OK, just checked the tags. To my surprise, the Jeep is equipped with 3.07 gears. Go figure. Thanks for the help with the tag. But why do you think they put such a high geared rear end in a manual transmission?

That is a little surprising, but Jeep does some odd things sometimes. Glad you found out what it has though.

Re: 99 Wrangler axle ratio

Here's my guess. The 3.07 is the std ratio for the 6-cyl manual tranny. The 3.73 is the HD towing package for the 6-cyl manual tranny. The 3.55 is for the 6-cyl auto and the 4.10 is for the 4-cyl.
