307 transmission

I've got a 1970 chevelle automatic. Its a four door with the...yes I know...the 307. How do I find out what transmission it has. Is it the turbo 350? Or is it something not so great? can you help me out?

Re: 307 transmission

I think its a powerglide. Look at the shifter. If its PRNDL its a powerglide, if its anything else should be a thm350.

cool. I have to buy a new transmission pan. The guy who owned it before me made the car into a lowrider and smashed up the underneath. Thanks for your help.

So if someone changed the transmission to say a T350 or T400 the shifter would show that???? No

Blue Bowtie posted the picture that is one way to tell, NOT the shift indicator...

Re: 307 transmission

Ok give me a break! I was assuming the car was stock, and if it is stock, my advice would be a nice simple way to answer the question without climbing under the car and matching up the pan to the picture.

I guess another good way to tell would be to drive the car and count the shifts.

Looks like the '70 could be had with either a THM or Powerglide.

See http://www.chevelles.com/years/70/power1.html

Sorry I wasn't busting your stones , nor did I know you were assuming it was stock? Yes they came with either PG or T350 I thought your were trying to determine which one he had. In which case you would have to climb under the car.
My 69 has a 396 in it and the indicator reads PRNDL, but it has a T400 in it...

I guess you could count the shifts but what if it was a T350 that only shifted into 2 gears ? Again, Not bustong your stones.......but it happens.

Re: 307 transmission

I was in a bookstore today and the one Chevelle book I looked at said the 70 Chevelle 6cyl could be had with the Powerglide, the 8s got the THM.

Unless he knows for FACT it is the original transmission, the easiest way to tell 100% for sure, is look at the pan which has been provided and suggested.

Maybe he is ordering parts for it and needs to know for sure what's IN the car . Not what CAME in the car. I could be wrong but I think that's what he is asking for help on, ID'ing the trans.

Re: 307 transmission

Well he seems to have disappeared, and unless if he is going to order parts, he will have to crawl under and look at the thing or take it somewhere and have someone look at it.

I'm just trying to let him know what to expect to find. I agree I may be making a wrong assumption, but I do think it is safe to say that most people who do not know what kind of tranny they have in their car has the stock tranny. If he bought the car from someone who changed the tranny, I'd expect the seller would have told him about any upgrade.

In any event, you and I seem to be the only ones who care anymore, and its not even our car!

Peace.

Re: 307 transmission

hello every one. sorry for the long delay. I think the most helpful thing is that diagram. i'll still have to crawl underthere and look. I do know that when i bought the car, the guy told me that he had someone rebuild the engine for him. I have never checked the engine numbers. But now I know the only way to tell what tranny it has is to look under the car.

Thanks again every one

Re: 307 transmission

Makes sense since that's what it came with, don't think anyone would have swapped it out for a powerglide (of course you never know!) and anything newer would have been a more complicated swap (but I'm sure someone would want a 4 speed automatic.)

I've got a '64 with a powerglide. The pic is the Roadmaster.
