Thumbs down Painting a boat

Hi folks, I posted on another auto forum but no response.

I live outback Australia, not much into cars but love to build things. I thought a forum like this would be able to help me immensely as I need to paint a new 5.6mts (19ft) aluminum boat I am building. I have never done any serious spray-painting before so bear with me. Last week I had a flying trip to the city so I thought I would get some paint and bits and pieces to paint. I went to Pro-tech spoke to them and come home with boxes of stuff. Thinners, etch pro, acrylic primer, acrylic lacquer, W,G remover, lightweight filler, etc. I talked to them a about acid washing first and they assured me I don’t need to do it on new material. I guess my big question is can someone talk me through the steps from go to whoa. I’m not looking for a professional job, I am just looking for something reasonable. BTW, I will only be painting insides and sides, not the bottom.

Vin

Re: Painting a boat

aluminum needs to be sanded with 80 grit paper first,,then you need ultra High build paint then sand that with 80 at first then go to 120 and that will level every thing out to a certain extense,,then your light wieght filler,,then primer,,then 320 grit sanding then top-coat,,but remember to NEVER sand if your not gonna paint in 24 hours
