Re: rattling noise under the hood
What motor is in yor truck?
Is it loud and accelerates with the rpm's? Is it comming from inside the engine ? Check if it's goes away after 3000 rpm,s. It might be yor timing belt tensiner.

Re: rattling noise under the hood
If it's 3.1 the timing belt tensioner is out of possibilities because that engine is equipped with timing chain. But it is possible that the chain start making noise due to stretching (high milage).Other things my cause noise too like a stuck lifter, worn out crank shaft bearings ,rod bearings. It really depends what kind of noise is it -sound of it.On the other hand it might be as simple as heat shield like Canucklehead replied,or worn out bearing on some of the accessories (Alternator ,a/c, p,s pump ,water pump)it's might sound like it's coming from inside the engine but is really not. To eliminate those things ,first crawl under the truck ,check for any loose heat shields if turns out it's not it you can take the belts out of accesories and start the truck for a few seconds if the noise dissapeare that will mean one of your accessorie is going bad ,if the noise is stiil there it will be most likely internal engine problem.
Good luck.
