92 cutlass problem?need advice

I got a 92 cutlass with a 3.1 motor and wanted to get a 3.4, but the 3.4 doesn't come with a tranny and I want to use the one form the 3.1. Is this possible? also has anyone had a problem swapping the two engines as far as compartment space. any help appreciated. T.I.A.

Same basic engine but the electronics are different, you would need the pcm and harness to operate the engine but then the trans electronics are incompatible. If you used the long block only, swapped over your intake and all accessories, including the sensors it should work, what year 3.4? BTW, welcome to AF.

IF the 3.4 is the DOHC engine, don't bother. They are tempermental, problematic engines. If the 3.4 is a Vin-E newer engine, you could use the shortblock as Max said, but that engine is OBD-II, so all the sensors and the entire upper end are different. They also use 2 crank sensors, your car uses 1, and a myraid of other issues that would make the swap a headache.

Re: 92 cutlass problem?need advice

Thanks for the advice and the welcome. I trashed the 3.4 idea and put back in the 3.1 MPFI motor now I have another issue, well two. The first is the check enigine light won't go off. I've heard this could be for any number of reasons but It might be somthin I can pinpoint since I just installed the motor. The second thing is the temp hand is al the way in the red and the car isn't hot. This causes the check gauges light to stay on. My mechanic suggested I get an entire new dash from the junk yard. I tried to reset it by taking a srewdriver and moving the gauge but I end up breaking it. Thansk for that help too.
